Chiropractic Care and How it Can Help Autism

Autism is a developmental and sensory disorder that effects a person’s ability to effectively communicate. Often described as a “spectrum disorder,” autism comes in many forms, and no two people with autism are the same. Some people with autism lead entirely independent lives, while others require care and assistance from their loved ones. Symptoms of autism generally start to present themselves before a child’s third birthday, and autism is far from rare. Recent studies have indicated that as many as 1 out of every 150 children have some form of autism, while the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates the numbers to be closer to 1 in every 110.

While on the surface it may not appear as though autism and chiropractic have anything in common, chiropractic care can actually be very effective as a complementary treatment for children with the condition. Chiropractic medicine has the potential to provide symptom relief and quality of life improvement for people with autism when combined with other therapies and treatments. In fact, several studies have shown a direct correlation between symptom improvement and chiropractic in children with the condition.

Many experts feel that a great deal of the complications that arise with autism are directly linked to poor function of the nervous system. Many children with autism experience mild to severe subluxations in their spines. Subluxations occur when the spine is not aligned properly, which places a lot of unnecessary strain and stress on the nervous system. When the nervous system is under stress, it makes it difficult for the brain to correctly send signals to the nerve receptors located throughout the body.

A chiropractor can gently work out these subluxations and realign your child’s spine without causing her any pain. Once her spine is aligned correctly, the stress on her nerves will be reduced and her nervous system will function better overall. Once her nervous system is able to function properly, her entire body will be able to function at the optimum level. This allows her to reach her maximum potential.

A study conducted by several chiropractic researchers in 2011 found that several common symptoms of autism were alleviated through regular chiropractic visits across the span of several months. One participant, a male who suffered from aggression, had decreased aggressive tendencies at the end of his treatment. The other, a female prone to hurting herself, was found to hurt herself less at the end of the study, and she also had improved socialization.

Of course, autism is a very complex disorder, and chiropractic medicine does not offer any form of cure. However, it is a safe, non-invasive treatment that offers less risks than many medications. It is recommended that you do not pursue chiropractic care as the sole or primary treatment for your child with autism, but rather as a supplemental therapy in addition to any medical care received by your child’s primary care physician or neurologist.
